How to End a Talking Stage Kindly: Text Examples That Are Clear

Not feeling the connection? Use polite, direct messages to end a talking stage without ghosting, blaming or offering false hope.

You have been messaging for a little while, perhaps even met once, and you know you do not want to continue. Finding the right words can be uncomfortable. You do not owe a lengthy defence of your feelings, but when a conversation has developed into mutual expectations, a brief clear message is usually kinder than fading away without explanation.

Decide whether a message is appropriate

If you exchanged two casual messages and neither person has replied for weeks, a formal closing note may not be necessary. If you have been talking daily, agreed to meet or dated several times, a brief message generally shows more consideration.

Safety matters more than etiquette. If someone has threatened you, repeatedly ignored boundaries or harassed you, you are not obliged to reply before blocking or reporting.

A straightforward message after chatting

Try: 'I've enjoyed getting to know you, but I'm not feeling the connection I'm looking for. I wanted to be honest rather than disappear. Wishing you well.'

This message speaks about your own decision. It avoids analysing the other person's appearance, personality or presumed flaws.

If you have met for a date or two

You might say: 'Thanks again for meeting last weekend. I had a nice time, but I don't feel a romantic connection. I didn't want to leave you wondering. Take care.'

If the dates involved ongoing plans, acknowledge them clearly. Do not suggest 'maybe later' simply to soften the blow if you already know you do not want to continue.

If they ask why

It is reasonable to repeat: 'There's nothing you need to change. I just don't think we're the right match.' You may choose to give more detail, but you do not owe a list of criticisms.

If they keep arguing about your decision, you can end the conversation politely. Repeating yourself once is often more helpful than entering a prolonged negotiation.

If you are the person receiving the message

A simple 'Thanks for being clear, I wish you well' is enough. You can be disappointed without trying to persuade someone into feelings they do not have.

Give yourself space if needed. Ending the talking stage does not erase the value of the conversations, and it leaves both people free to look for a better fit.

Messages to avoid

Avoid vague offers such as 'Maybe in a few months' when you have no intention of reconnecting. False hope can keep both people waiting. Likewise, avoid a detailed verdict on someone's personality when a simple difference in feeling is enough.

If you have concrete safety concerns or experienced disrespect, you can set a firmer boundary: 'I don't want further contact. Please don't message me again.' You do not have to negotiate that boundary.

A checklist before you press send

Read your draft once for accuracy: Is it clear the connection is ending? Is the tone respectful? Did you avoid apologising so much that the message becomes ambiguous? Are there any practical plans you need to cancel?

Send only what you stand behind, then give the other person room to respond or not respond. If they reply with disappointment, you can acknowledge it without reopening the relationship.
