Ghosting or Just Busy? How to Read the Difference
Slow replies are not automatically ghosting. The difference becomes clearer when you look at duration, expectations, follow-through and whether the person eventually re-engages with normal effort.
Busy people often communicate less, but they usually leave some trace of continuity: they return, acknowledge the gap or follow through on plans. Ghosting is better understood as sustained unexplained disengagement than as a specific number of hours without a reply.
There is no universal ghosting timer
The relevant timeframe depends on your established pattern. A day can feel unusual in a daily conversation but completely normal in a casual app chat.
Busy usually still has continuity
Someone who is genuinely overloaded may reply later, explain briefly, pick up the previous topic or continue with plans. The conversation has gaps, but it does not repeatedly reset to zero.
Ghosting is a pattern of disengagement
Concern grows when messages stop entirely, plans are ignored and there is no later attempt to reconnect despite a previously active relationship or dating pattern.
Do not over-message to force clarity
One proportionate follow-up may be reasonable. Repeated messages rarely reveal whether someone is busy and can increase your own anxiety.
You can make a decision without knowing the reason
You do not need proof that someone intentionally ghosted you to decide that the current level of communication does not work for you.
